Types of Roofing Materials in the Philippines
Considering which roofing solution to choose is one of the most essential part in a construction project, especially for residential buildings. Apart from the fact that it protects the whole structure from various weather elements, it is also one of the main parts that gives the building a better design.
Here in the Philippines, there are several roofing materials that are used in some construction projects. Some of these materials that are generally utilized and available locally are metal roofing (pre-painted), GI sheets (Galvanize Iron), Shingles (fiber cement, asphalt, wood) and Clay or Ceramic roof tiles. Another essential material that is also needed for some building projects are concrete roof decks.
The GI sheet is the most preferred roofing material in the market. The unpainted corrugated GI roofing is the most common thing that is seen in several residences throughout the country. The relatively low cost and local availability is the main reason why many people use the generic GI roofing. This type of roofing material however, is prone to corrosion and is not that highly resistant to certain weather that it may require a whole sheet replacement from time to time. One can prevent rusting and leaks though – by applying several layers of roof paint and applying some roof foam and sealants.
The pre-painted longspan metal roofing is also a low cost roofing material but has a better quality than the generic GI sheet. There are also metal roofs that are molded to look like wave tiles, clay roofs, etc. This type of roofing material is preferred by mid-upper class markets. Some pre-painted metal roofs are built to last for more than 10 years and are actually covered by a warranty. This type of roofing material is proven to be more resistant to extreme weather conditions that leads to corrosion and leaks. There are also different types of pre-painted roof sheets that are available locally such as aluminum, tin and copper – which are relatively expensive.
The Shingles and Roof tiles are commonly bought in the high-end market. These heavy and expensive roofing materials require some metal concrete roof decks to keep them in place. This is a more reliable material as it is proven to be more resistant to extreme weather conditions and is not prone to leak.
Several factors like roofing design, installation and maintenance will also greatly affect the resistance of your roofing solution to extreme weather conditions, corrosion and leaks. Therefore, proper design, installation and maintenance is needed if you want your roof to last. Seeking the help of a professional construction company will make the task easy for you.
